Lord, when your glory appears, my joy will be full. Psalm 17:1
It is hard to imagine what it will be like to be face-to-face with God. We will be in complete and perfect union with God. Our joy will be full.
But we can get a small taste of this union with God by following His laws here on earth and by being as close to Him as we can. It may sound simple, but it’s not. The tendency to sin is inherent in all of us. We need God’s grace to help us to be as close to Him as possible. Prayer and fasting, the sacraments and adoration give us the graces we need to be virtuous and to avoid sin.
We can all attest to the fact that when we are following God’s laws, we are more joyful and peaceful. When we sin, our soul naturally feels out of place, no matter how much temporary pleasure the sin brings.
Many North Americans have little self-control. Consider the high rates of obesity, materialism, debt and sexual sin. While it is excellent that the Catholic Church obliges Catholics to fast on two days per year (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday), when we fast during the ordinary year, we can become better at self-control, which will help us increase in virtue and joy.
Today let us pray and fast for all the community intentions, for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and for all those who are slaves to sin.
Holy Mary, pray for us! St. Cecilia, pray for us! Holy Spirit, teach us to pray! Holy Souls in Purgatory, pray for us!
