Fasting and the Words of Everlasting Life

Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life;
you have the words of everlasting life. John 6:63

God truly does have the words of everlasting life. And we can find His words and commands in Sacred Scripture. God’s laws are not there to hurt us or to make our life bad. God doesn’t want to ruin are life. On the contrary, His laws are there to protect us and to make us holy so that we can spend eternity with Him in heaven.

In Scripture, we learn that Jesus fasted before every major event in His life. He urged His followers to fast by saying, “When you fast.” It was a given that they would fast.

Are you reading Scripture on a daily basis? If you are not, make a resolution to do so. If you’re not able to attend Daily Mass, the daily Scripture readings are available at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/032218.cfm (all the readings are included if you click on the date of the calendar at the upper right-hand corner of the page.)

God wants us to be holy so that we can be close to Him. God wants us to fast. Fasting helps us curb addictions, invites the Holy Spirit into our hearts and helps us to increase in virtue. Fasting takes selfishness away and replaces it with selflessness because we can offer up our fasting for others. Fasting leads us closer to Christ.

As we near the end of Lent, keep fasting! Let us pray and fast for all the community prayer intentions, for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and for all those who are far away from God.

Holy Mary, pray for us! Holy Spirit, teach us to pray!
