Fasting and Losing One’s Life to Save It

“Jesus said to His disciples: Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it,
but whoever loses it will save it.” Luke 17:34

Most Christians will not die a martyr’s death. But every day, as Christians, we surrender our lives to God, usually in small ways: allowing someone to go in front of us at the store, helping a mother with a small child, reacting in a gentle way when someone cuts in front of us while we’re driving.

When we are selfless, our life has meaning. When we put others before ourselves, when we sacrifice for others, we are following Christ’s example by offering up our life to save it.

Fasting for others helps us to be selfless and self-sacrificial. By fasting, we practice self-control and self-denial. The more we are selfless, the more we can give of ourselves to others without counting the cost. Every day, we can offer ourselves as a gift to God, and eventually, we can reach our eternal home in heaven.

Today let us pray and fast for all the community intentions, for the Holy Souls in Purgatory and for those who don’t understand the sacrificial meaning of their lives.

Holy Mary, pray for us! St. Elizabeth of Hungary, pray for us! Holy Souls of Purgatory, pray for us! Holy Spirit, teach us to pray!
