The book, “Fast with the Heart” by Fr. Slavko Barbaric is a wonderful fasting companion and outlines the basics and beginnings to a bread and water fast. We highly recommend reading it before or as you start fasting.
The key is start incrementally. Just as one wouldn’t go to the gym for the first time and try bench-pressing 300 pounds, the same is true for fasting. Fasting is a journey and takes time, perseverance and patience.
We also come from different walks of life and of faith, which is why there will be some people who can jump right in to a 24-hr bread and water fast once a week and others they may need to start by just eliminating snacks two days a week. The range of “starts” is as numerous as there are individuals. Through prayer and discernment with the Lord, He will guide you how to start.
We also recommend discussing a fasting schedule with your parish priest or spiritual director (if you have one).
