What are the fasting and feasting seasons of the Church?

Advent and Lent are the two penitential seasons that we are to fast in preparation for the celebrations of Christmas and Easter.

The Advent season begins with the earliest Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Andrew and includes 4 Sundays.

The Christmas Season begins Christmas Eve with the Vigil Mass and goes until the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

The Lenten season begins with Ash Wednesday and goes up to but excluding the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, at which point the Paschal Fast begins. The Paschal Fast continues through Good Friday and Holy Saturday and concludes with Communion at the Easter Vigil.

The Easter Season is 50 days and goes until Pentecost.

There are also Solemnities and Feast Days scattered throughout the liturgical year.
