Can I fast during a Feast Season?

Rev. Msgr. Charles Murphy, author of “The Spirituality of Fasting” wrote “We fast in order to feast. Fasting and feasting are the natural rhythms of the Christian life.” In embracing the feasts of our faith, we are celebrating with Jesus who is with us in a special way during this Easter Season and other solemnities of the Church. We are reminded of Mark 2:19 where Jesus said  ‘While the bridegroom is with them, the attendants of the bridegroom cannot fast, can they? So long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast.’”

We also brought this question to one of our dear priests, Father Thomas Hart, OSB, who is very knowledgeable and experienced with fasting to see what advice he could provide and this is what he shared:
“The Paschal Season is a time of joy, having come to personally experience that the power of God at work within us is greater than our inclination to sin. Trust the Church’s tradition on this, and also trust that the Lord will bless your intention and motivation to resume the regular weekly fast once the Easter season is officially over. As to the fear that you will lose your sense of discipline, cast this apprehension on the Lord, and allow him to bless you and to teach you (1 Peter 5:7).”
