The Chaplet of the Holy Fast


Start at the crucifix with the Sign of the Cross.

First bead: The Apostles’ Creed

(We confess the faith in which we believe.)

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Then we pray The Our Father….

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen
Then we pray the Hail Mary….

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Then we pray The Glory be….

The Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.


Saint Michael the Archangel prayer. (Prayer to Saint Michael will enable us to fight all distractions as we try to pray and all discouragement as we try to fast.)


St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

First Mystery:

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne fasted to conceive a child

(Briefly meditate on how the parents of our Blessed Mother fasted to be chosen for such a great privilege. Fasting is very pleasing in the eyes of God.)


Then, on each of the following ten beads repeat the phrase:

“Not by bread alone does man live, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”

Second Mystery:

Prophetess Anna fasted and prayed day and night in the temple

(Briefly meditate on the insights of prayer that we receive when we fast. We will grow in wisdom and knowledge.)

Ten times: “Not by bread alone….


Third Mystery:

John the Baptist fasted and prayed to prepare the way for the Messiah

(Briefly meditate how John the Baptist, the herald of our Savior, fasted and prayed in the desert and converted many souls to welcome our Savior. Even the hardest of hearts will convert through these two powerful means.)


Ten times: Not by bread alone….


Fourth Mystery:

Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights in the desert

(Briefly consider how our Lord and Savior fasted and prayed before He began his public ministry.

He defeated temptation through fasting and began his ministry with great anointing.)

Fifth Mystery:

Jesus teaches the value of fasting and prayer to his disciples

(Briefly meditate how Jesus teaches his disciples to pray and fast so that healings and

miracles may happen through their intercession.

Jesus continues to teach us today how to fast and pray.)


Ten times: Not by bread alone….


Returning to the last beads, say on the first bead:

“Eternal Father, not my will, but yours be done!

I surrender to all that you want from me!”

In the next three beads say:

“I am the bread of life. He who eats my Body and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him.” (Three times)


On the last bead you say, “Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy…. To follow the advice that our Blessed Mother gave the first disciples at Cana in Galilee: “Do whatever He tells you!”

The Hail Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.


Make the Sign of the Cross again, and kiss the crucifix.

Gold beads (or Yellow): The color of wheat and bread….
