Did you know that Advent is a penitential season?
Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three pillars that help us prepare for the birth of Christ. Advent is often referred to as the “little Lent” – hence the purple liturgical color.
“If we want to transform life once more, and if it really ought to become Advent once more–Advent of the homeland, and Advent of hearts, and Advent of our people, and Advent of all peoples–and, included in all that, the coming of the Lord–then the one great Advent question for us is whether we can come out of these shakings with the resolve: Yes, arise! It is time to awaken from sleep. It time for an awakening to begin somewhere; and it is time that someone places things again in the order that they were given by God the Lord. Moreover, now it is time for each individual to use every opportunity to guide life into this order now– and to do it with the same “unshakeability” with which the Lord will come.” – Father Alfred Delp, S.J. (+1945)
“In the shadow of Paul Revere’s home, this simple immigrant nun in her comments just might have started something important in America. Asking God’s help yes, but also the involvement of concerned American’s to save other fellow humans who can’t help themselves. No powerful politicians in attendance to hear her comments. No TV cameras. Just a church filled group of Americans concerned about people they don’t know and a country they know very little about.”
