The prince of this world will now be cast out,
and when I am lifted up from the earth
I will draw all to myself, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Today is the 100th anniversary of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima. It is a wonderful occasion for celebration. But it is also an occasion to examine our lives and to examine whether we are listening to the messages of Our Lady throughout the 20th century and continuing into this century. Our Lady of Fatima predicted many of the horrible events of the 20th century and her message is even more relevant and important today. In many of the Church-approved apparitions, Our Lady has always encouraged — and begged — us to pray the Rosary and to fast.
In Scripture, we see many examples of fasting. Jesus fasted. Certain demons, “can be cast out in no other way except by prayer and fasting,” said Jesus. (Mark 9:29)
Why is fasting so powerful against Satan? And why does the evil one hate it?
When we fast, we naturally increase in virtue. Fasting invites the Holy Spirit into our hearts.
Fasting takes our spirituality to a much deeper commitment. With fasting, we embrace the sacrifice of not eating whenever we want and of eating small amounts of food/bread. By fasting on a regular basis, we can eliminate addictive behaviors.
Fasting draws us closer to God and away from the evil one. Fasting draws us closer to our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ.
No matter how difficult it gets, please continue to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays. Our world is so full of sin, hatred, lust, anger, blasphemy and indifference. Our world needs our fasting commitment. Our world needs our daily Rosary.
If you have medical issues and you’re not able to fast from food, you can fast from your schedule, fast from television and social media and/or spend an hour in adoration on fasting days.
Today, as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s sixth apparition to the children at Fatima and the Miracle of the Sun, let us pray and fast for world peace, for the conversion of all sinners, for the community intentions and for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.
Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us! Holy Spirit, teach us to pray!
